This series of annual lectures was begun in 1969 under the auspices of the Marquette University Department of Theology. This 1993 lecture is the twenty-fourth in the series.
Gerald G. O Collins, S.J., professor of fundamental theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, delivered the 1993 lecture at Marquette University on April 14, 1993. Father O Collins was born in Melbourne, Australia and entered the Society of Jesus in 1950. He pursued studies in Australia, in Germany, and in England, receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge when a research fellow at Pembroke College. He taught theology at Weston School of Theology (Boston Theological Institute) and at the United Faculty of Theology of Melbourne. He returned to Pembroke College in 1973-74 as a visiting fellow. From 1974 he has been at the Gregorian University and, from 1985-91, served as the dean of the faculty of theology. In 1991 Fr. O Collins received an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco.
Father O Collins has authored or coauthored twenty-five books and innumerable articles principally in the area of fundamental theology and Christology including Foundations of Theology, Fundamental Theology, Problems and Perspectives of Fundamental Theology, Retrieving Fundamental Theology, Interpreting Jesus, Luke and Acts, Believing, A Concise Dictionary of Theology, as well as two volumes of the What are They Saying About ... series. His volume on Jesus launched the series. In the present lecture he will examine some contemporary issues involving the resurrection of Jesus Christ ranging from the investigation of the resurrection experiences of the early Christians to the relevance of the resurrection for Trinitarian theology and for Christian faith today. In this he continues the line of development and considerable learning already displayed in such works as Jesus Risen, The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, The Easter Jesus, and Interpreting the Resurrection.
