He has been actively associated with the Blue Hill Christian Center, an inner-city ministry in the Boston area, and is a leader in the civil rights movement. He spent 1962-63 studying at the Free University of Berlin and, as an ecumenical worker for the Gossner Mission, helped maintain two-way communication between Christians of East and West Berlin. He is the author of the popular book The Secular City, as well as many articles.
